Leftovers: 0 S: Flew 9 lengths during assessment + another 4 during catch. Flights are slightly lopsided, but consistent. Flight is very quiet, but not entirely silent. Tends to dip down during flights, but is able to get height back up to land perches.
O: No survivors in live prey well. Flight eval. Checked wings- R primary 10 is broken, otherwise feathers are WNL. Caught bird and boxed to bring up for banding.
A: BAR. Flight is imperfect, however it is improved significantly since we began flight conditioning. He appears to be compensating for his injuries as best he can and stamina has improve significantly. He also passed live prey testing with no issue. Flight is not entirely silent, although that may be due to the broken RP10. We may considering imping this feather if we are concerned it will affect his ability to catch prey in the wild. Overall, I believe this bird is ready for release.

A: BAR Did 6 passes at a decent height and on the 7th, it landed lower and attached to the wall and then dropped to the ground near the door. When moving it, its flight was shallow and landed near the front of the live prey well. It also appeared to fly with its caudal end to the right.

Flapping a lot. Flies close to obstacles, but makes conscious effort to avoid. Frequently veers right during flight, then corrects near to perch.

A: BAR. Has decent endurance. Flight is not perfect, but does consciously avoid obstacles and generally lands well.

S: Started on shelter box by door, did 3 full passes, on the 4th pass hit perch on blind side and grounded. From ground could only get about 6ft of lift. Caught and tossed 3 times, first 2 times flew the whole length then grounded. On the last time only went about 10ft before refusing to fly again.
O: Exercised. A: Initial flights looked good but after grounding bird cannot get lift right away. Concerned with flight issues and ocular issues that it will be too much for possibility of release.

O: Flew to back wall, grounded and then was only able to get lift to about halfway up the height of the enclosure before hitting the other wall and grounded. Flight crooked with excessive flapping. Then bird ran and did not fly. Caught and tossed: bird flew across enclosure and was able to get to high perch again. When tried to get bird to fly again, bird grounded and ran, unable to get any lift off ground. Caught up and felt wing - reduced extension in the L wing in the elbow, patagial tendon has multiple knots along the proximal aspect. SF: 146 rat, squirrel, chick
A: Despite initially flying better in larger flight, bird now seems to be doing worse.
P: Consider humane euthanasia if no improvement seen in flight.

Leftovers: 0 S: Standing on back shelter box and flew, then kicked off side wall and clung to back wall for a few seconds before grounding. Flying away low to ground and barely able to get lift. Was eventually able to use entire length of mew to get back up to the height onto shelter box.
O: Followed around to try and get back up to height of mew. Bucket cleaned. Dropped 139g of rat/chick. No leftovers.
A: Grounded before exercising could even start. Bird had a difficult time getting back up to perches and flew low top the ground when trying to encourage flight. Was tired by the time it eventually got back up to shelter box.

Made two more full length passes from ground to ground on own with flights not exceeding 1/2 height of enclosure. Then grounded fully and only ran. Caught and tossed high one time - gliding to a stop on the ground.
O: Exercised bird. Got 2 passes from him on his own, then an additional pass from tossing. Did not push beyond as he was stressed and breathing heavily by this time.
A: BAR. Flight ability seems to have diminished significantly since last seen on 11/18.

Would lose ~2-3' of height on the 8th length but still made it up to perches. Did not ground. Flight not silent. Flight lopsided but flies straight and hits perches fine.

A: BAR. Flight and stamina are improving. I do think the rain caused a lot of his issues yesterday, as he's flying much better and is able to stay up now.

Instigated to fly once more and he did it, but was only just barely able to clear the live prey well.

A: BAR. It's actively raining so that may be affecting his flight, but flights were overall better than I would expect of him in wet conditions. Seems to be compensating, but definitely still needs BID exercise. Will put as staff/interns only to ensure he's getting good exercise.

Weight: 1364.0 grams, BCS: 4.0 S: Bird has had consistent
O: Flat scabs noted on the plantar aspects of RD2, RD4 but bird is known to cling to wire. L distal TBT fracture feels very stable, normal PROM in the hock joint. Reduced extension in the L elbow, carpus feels okay. Fracture site very stable with good bony callus, callus has a small point felt caudally but no wounds in the skin. Proximal patagial tendon has a large thickened knot, massaged while bird was in hand. Took x-rays: fracture site look good/better than on last x-rays. Can see very thickened area over patagial tendon, the muscle over the humerus and between the humerus and r/u looks a little thickened/abnormal as well. Performed laser therapy on tendon and wing.
A: Bird not flying well likely from issues with muscle and patagium - prognosis very guarded but will see if time in a large flight will allow bird to use wing more and improve flight and muscle condition.
P: Move to Old Flight and exercise bird, monitor flights.

After catch, tossed- bird dropped down ground, then jumped up to edge of live prey well. Flew to back wall and clung mid-way up height of wall.
O: Exercised bird to flight eval. Caught bird for weight and recheck. L humerus seems static, extension decent. L TBT stable, bird appears to be perching fine with the leg and foot. Wounds on feet static/resolving.
A: BAR. Flights today were very poor compared to what previous notes have said. In her current condition, I do not believe live prey testing would be appropriate. Instead, we should focus more on flight conditioning. She has the tendency to cling and climb the wire, although it's unclear if this is because she cannot fly up to the perches or if it is an individual choice. If we find she is not exercising normally, we may need to start catching and tossing in order to really get her to work those muscles.

Flew towards front platform. After opening door, flew to back perch. Hissing, clacking, flaring, which increased in intensity as he was approached. Upon approach, flew over me towards middle shelter. Flew back to back perch when approached again.
[25498] / Yellow / AHY / M? - Appeared to have been fighting with Archie before entering, however remained on back platform when Archie flew off. Hissing, clacking, and flaring, which increasedin intensity when approached. Flew over me after Archie flew when approached. Flew towards front platform. Remained there until approached again.
Found untouched half of rat stashed on front right platform in far corner.

O: BAR and angry. Kicking both legs. Tends to keep the L foot open a little more than the R foot, callus at the L hock is very stable, hock joint feels very stable. Very small wound on the plantar aspect of RD2. Reduced extension in the L wing at the elbow, only able to get to around 110 degrees. Proximal aspect of the patagium is thickened, massaged and performed PT on wing with bird in hand. Callus over humerus feels very stable, slightly sharp point along the ventral aspect of the wing.
A: Bird overall doing well and fractures feels stable. Slight reduced use of the L foot and possible early bumble of the R foot, reduced extension in the L wing and thickened patagium. Prognosis continues to be very guarded.
P: Monitor use of L wing and ability to fly. Monitor extension in joints and thickening in the patagium on the wing.

Weight: 1418.0 grams, BCS: 2.5 S: Crouched low. When stood up, kept L leg down on hock. Flappy and BAR.
O: Callus over the L distal TBT feels very stable. Muscle atrophy present over the L leg, hock joint may be a little lax but this could be secondary to decreased use/atrophy. Callus over L humerus feels more stable, soft tissue swelling present near the bony callus that may be from muscle in this area that healed thickened after damage and infection. No evidence of active infection at this time. Slightly reduced PROM in the elbow joint still. Took x-rays of the L humerus and L TBT: overall the bony calluses appear improved since pulling the IM pins, calluses look healthy and solid.
A: Fractures are healing well, bird needs to go outside and start building up muscle and use in damaged limbs. Still not sure if bird will regain full normal flights after all the trauma and infection that was present at the humerus fracture site, but best chance for bird is to start to use leg and wing more and see how he does.
P: Monitor use of L leg, L wing outside. Monitor flights, watch for limp/wing droop.

O: 1 cast. Respirations still a bit wet and raspy. Performed PT, did not require torb. Good initial extension on L wing, both elbow and shoulder a bit tight. Not quite able to get elbow to full extension. Fx itself feels stable. Large calloused mass extending from dorsal aspect of fracture feels soft in places and like it may be in two pieces, one that is connected to the bone and another that is close by but loose. Loose portion feels softer and can be moved slightly when pressed on. Performed PT on L leg. All joints a bit tight but bird was also resisting PT. Fx site feels stable but still a bit soft. Feathers on leg starting to grow back. Both fxs feel stable currently but still have slight flex to them. L wing is slightly rotated at fx site. Using L leg and foot well. Still exhibiting harsh lung sounds with elevated RR

A: BAR. L wing very tight before PT but loosens over the course of it. ROM seems decent in the leg but bird is still not want to put weight on the foot and tends to roll back onto the hock. Am concerned about the crackling heard in lungs. Bird has been on clinda/TMS since 9/5. Clinda appears to be effective for the bones, but might try to switch back to baytril to help stave off any potential lung infection. Terb may also be beneficial to prevent secondary asper infection and we'll want to get chest x rays soon just to make sure she's not developing any plaques. Also, bird has been on meloxicam since intake. Want to try bird off of it and keep gaba for pain management. If the gaba doesn't seem to be doing enough, we can add tram.

O: Checked respiration, noted breathing stressful but sounds clear. Resp rate at 30 bpm. Collected blood from R medial metatarsal. Performed PT to L leg, hock joint was a little stiff. L TBT callus stable and scab over L proximal TBT site scabbed. Performed PT to L wing, large callus on L humerus site stable. Noted L wing could not fully extend, but was able to get decent stretches without needing torb. Gave oral meds. No leftovers.

A: Patient struggled in hand regardless if PT was being performed or not. Was able to do PT to L leg and L wing without needing torb. O: Pre-medicated with 0.26 ml torb IM, then anesthetized with isoflurane via facemask. Intubated with 4.0 uncuffed ET tube and took x-rays: L TBT fracture has very large callus that overall looks healthy. Large callus also present around the L humerus but concerned that it does not appear as healthy, concerned for possible sequestrum with dead bone in the center of the fracture site based on x-ray appearance. No treatment if this is the case, so elected to pull all pins. Bird started to crash, gave low dose atropine IM and turned iso off. Bird seemed to recover, heart rate grew stronger, so put back on low isoflurane to finish pulling pins. Took x-rays after pin pulling. Bird recovered uneventfully from anesthesia. Let sit for a minute while listening to lungs - increased respiratory sounds bilaterally with more of a crackle on lower left side. Stretched left leg - good extension, cannot fully flex hock joint. Does not seem able to curl left toes especially when compared to other foot in either extended or flexed leg position. Pin sites clean on leg and ESF stable. IM pin site on humerus has some discharge, otherwise pin sites clean and stable. Sutures on ventral aspect of left wing intact with some scabbing but do not look like they are dehiscing. Stretched left wing - full extension in wrist and almost full extension in elbow. Struggles a lot when trying to push last 10 degrees of elbow. Gave meds orally. Removed 1 cast and no scrap from cage.

Leftovers: 31 S: Perched, clacking. Stepped off of perch before catch O: Gave 0.23cc torb IM and let sit for 3 minutes (had to check in another bird from finder). Very bruised on left side of keel. Performed PT on L wing and L leg. Left wing got full extension at wrist and elbow. Sutures intact on ventral aspect, still bruised along humerus from cellulitis removal, still has dark colored fluid over ventral elbow. IM pin site scabbed with a little discharge. L leg pins clean and intact. Noted grinding and popping of tendon over hock during extension especially when bird kicked out on his own. Removed 31g scrap and 1 cast from cage. Gave meds orally. facemask, then intubated with 4.0 uncuffed ET tube. Took x-rays:
some osteomyelitis around both fracture sites, lots of fragments
around the L TBT fracture, large soft tissue swelling present
over the humeral fracture site. Scrubbed the dorsal aspect of
the L humerus, incised over the swelling with a #15 blade. Large
amount of bloody fluid present, flushed wound site. Thick cellulitis
present - remove/debrided. Turbed bird onto back and scrubbed
ventral aspect of wing, incised over the ventral aspect of the
swelling to make there were no other pockets of fluid or cellulitis.
Flushed site and closed with with 4-0 webcryl in a horizontal
mattress pattern. Turned bird back into ventral recumbency,
flushed wound site again, infused site with 0.24 ml baytril.
Closed skin in the same manner. Applied tissue glue to ventral
sutures. Stretched wing under GA, able to get better extension
after removal of cellulitis. Took post op x-ray, soft tissue
lesion no longer present. Covered sutures on both sides of wing
with TAO, telfa and tegaderm. Bird recovered uneventfully from
anesthesia. |

P: Switch from baytril and Clavamox to clindamycin and TMS. PT EOD on wing, give torb as needed before PT. Monitor for reoccurance of seroma along L humerus. Monitor appetite and use of L leg. Bird slow to recover from anesthesia but recovered uneventfully. Intraop x-rays show that there is still some bone in the ventriculus despite the large cast.

A: Surgery sites seem to be healing, especially L humerus. Concerned for amount of crepitus still present at L TBT fx and popping at L hock joint. Popping could be related to placement of pins, since they had to be placed so close to joint, but could also indicate an issue with slipped tendons or other joint damage that will compromise its long term function. Seems to be bearing weight on it when walking. Patient is also declining in BCS and still not eating on own.
P: Vet check tomorrow for L hock popping. Increase PM food to 60g and HF 1/2, SF 1/2 on chop block.

humerus, removed bandages from L wing. Took pre-op x-ray of
L TBT - distal fragment is small and comminuted but felt still
could be repairable. Prepped L humerus for surgery, examined
exposed humeral bone for viability - no necrotic bone visible
at this time. Placed IM pin up the proximal fragment, out of
the shoulder. Cut the distal IM pin and drove across the fracture
site to seat near the elbow. Took intraop rads to check placement.
Cleaned wound site on dorsal wing, closed with 4-0 webcryl in
a simple interrupted pattern. Placed threaded cross pins in
each fragment, bent IM pin around back of wing and secured IM
pin and cross pins together with epoxy. Cleaned and closed small
wound on ventral wing with single suture. Covered sutures with
TAO, telfa and tegaderm and placed figure-8 and body wrap on
wing. Scrubbed the L TBT for surgery, incised over the medial
aspect of the fracture site, dissected down to the fracture site.
Placed IM pin up the proximal fragment and out the bent stifle,
cut the distal end of the pin and then drove normograde across
the fracture site to seat in the small distal fragment. Loose
butterfly fragment around the fracture site. Took intraop x-rays
to confirm placement, flushed wound site and closed muscle and
skin in seperate layers with 4-0 webcryl. Placed one smooth
cross pin in the distal fragment and 2 in the larger proximal
fragment, bent IM pin laterally around leg, bent cross pins and
secured IM pin to the lateral cross pins and the medial cross
pins together with epoxy. Bird recovered slowly but uneventfully
from anesthesia. |

Bruising and swelling present around uropygial gland, abrasion on the R side of the gland. Cleaned and covered area with dermagel. Removed fluke from under R side of tongue. MM slightly tacky, dry skin in both ears. Checked eyes: OD WNL, OS has corneal scar, posterior synechia with partial cataract in the dorsal/medial aspect of the lens. A: Bird needs surgery to repair both humerus and TBT fractures. Prognosis very guarded - humeral fracture is open and TBT fracture is very close to the hock joint. Will be able to better assess if bird is good candidate for surgery once bird is anesthetized. Old trauma to L eye present, no signs of active issues here, bird seems visual.

No swelling in left foot and L leg splint intact so also did not adjust (alignment not great on rads with splint but unsure if replacing it would get any better alignment so left alone with possible surgery tomorrow). Heart very quiet and slower than normal, a couple "hiccups" in breathing and also slow but WNL. Bird is dehydrated, no defecation overnight, DNE. Collected blood from right wing - small hematoma formed, could not collect from right leg due to migrated SQ fluids. Opted to tube oral fluids, HF 40g rat, gave oral meds. Open on dorsal aspect with ~1cm of proximal humerus end sticking out. Bone still moist and healthy color. Able to tuck bone back in to skin but could still see bone in 1.5cm wound. Small (3mm) wound on ventral aspect of wing. No bone visible within ventral wound. Legs: fx to distal L TBT. Deep pain still present in foot Feet: NSF Body: NSF Feather condition: Good. Some of older feathers a bit thin at tips Ectoparasites: Flat flies Radiographic findings: Confirmed fxs to L humerus and TBT. Humerus fx is relatively simple. TBT fx has some splintering and is relatively close to joint Initial treatment: Tucked L humeral bone back into skin, packed wound with hydrogel, stapled closed using 3 staples, covered with telfa and tega. Applied hydrogel and covered ventral wound with telfa and tega. Wrapped L wing in figure-8 wrap of cast padding and vet wrap with body band. Wrapped L leg in cast padding, splinted with SAM splint, and then wrapped with vet wrap. Confirmed splint placement with VD/Lateral rads. Gave 0.19cc baytril PO + 1 tablet 125mg clavamox PO + 0.31cc meloxicam PO + 0.16cc simbadol IM + 46cc LRS SQ + 1.17cc Ca Slurry PO. Placed in cage in CC Room. Dropped 30g rat on chop block.
A: HBC owl with fxs to L humerus and TBT. Very guarded prognosis due to proximity of TBT fx to joint and open nature of humerus fx. Both will need surgical repairs ASAP. Bird is also likely blind OS, but that appears to be from an older injury based on presence of corneal scar and lack of bruising/inflammation around that eye as well as lack of head trauma symptoms.
P: Rx baytril, Clavamox, tramadol, meloxicam, Calcium slurry, pentox, and SQ fluids. Collect blood and fecal 8/18. Vet check and surgery 8/19. Leave L wing wrap and L leg splint alone until surgery unless require adjusting. SF in PM, HF in AM if DNE. Monitor use of L foot.
